Is Capello Thick?

Montenegro. I’m guessing it means Black Mountain. Which is pretty much what Fabio Capello has to scale if he’s to win over the media and fans alike after Tuesday night.

If I remember rightly, the South African debacle was going to be an opportunity to blood some new lads, to pump fresh life into the rotting cadaver of England’s football. Seemingly Capello had revived the lumbering beast enough to scare off Bulgaria and Switzerland, but Nico Krancjar’s Dad knew better.

Here’s a man who clearly put his sanity on the line for his big Wembley night – he watched Algeria v England from the World Cup and thought ‘We could do that.’

That’s right get ten men behind the ball against Capello’s England and they’ll counter by keeping their ten men behind the ball too. Get out o’ that one you former Yugoslavians.

Give England possession of the football and then sit back and marvel at the almost total lack of ingenuity. If scientists were England footballers we’d still be waking up every morning and shielding our eyes from the big scary yellow thing in the sky.

And I’m prepared once and for all to lay most of the blame at the door of the manager.

True, certain absences didn’t help. Crouch and Rooney is a match made in Wife Swap. Rooney comes deep, Crouchy stays where he is. Rooney tries to stay up alongside the Cleopatra’s Needle of Football and the ball pings off he head in all directions and the old Scouse bulldog is left confused, frustrated and a yellow card in waiting.

Funny how Wazza’s insisting he hasn’t got an ankle injury when the Ferguson says he has. I wouldn’t rule out Rooney getting a definitively poorly ankle in the next couple of training sessions at United. If his ankle’s sound, his mind’s not. And a moony, loony Rooney means the national team create nowt.

Crouch is and always has been Plan B. If you’re smarter players are getting nowhere, thrown on the bamboo and get some tired defenders in a tizzy.

Capello’s also got a problem with his utterly unfeasible adoration with Gareth Barry. Here’s a man who plods around like a bloody pensioner and, worse still, just giving the ball to the nearest man regardless of their nationality. He needs a bloody shopmobility card that lad.

It’s nowt short of embarrassing how slow he is. I’ve seen milk turn faster. Owen Hargreaves is rumoured to be in the squad at United this weekend and hellfire I hope he stays fit. Cos that lad has an engine. I’m not even sure Barry’s got a laggy band.

But Capello’s worse decisions come when it’s time to change the flow of the game. We had an hour of Englishmen knocking at the Montenegran door with the football equivalent of a scatter cushion. What does Fab do? Takes off Ashley Young, a small and nippy right-winger with a variable ability to get the ball in the box. And replace him with (fuck me old boots!) Shaun Height-Limits, a small and nippy right-winger with a variable ability to get the ball in the box.

I mean what’s that about? If I order a pint of ale at the Blue Bell and it’s off, I don’t expect them to tip the damn thing away and pour me another one! Change the flaming barrel. Or give us summat new!

But wait, here’s another substitution... take off Peter Crouch, a tall persevering and awkward customer who can cause defenders problems in the air but has an annoying habit of giving away too many free kicks and bring on... Kevin Davies a tall persevering and awkward customer who can cause defenders problems in the air but has an annoying habit of giving away too many free kicks.

It’s mad! I tell you, it’s bloody crazy. There’s a Plan A and Plan B is Plan A only more so. It’s actually worse than mad. It’s thick.

It’s thick to think that Gerrard spraying Hollywood passes hither and thither from a deep-lying position is going to get you more goals than him popping up in and around the opposition’s penalty area.

It’s thick not to realise that Adam Johnson could’ve had a dig on the other flank for a bit, especially as the right-back was a new boy and AJ was our biggest threat.
It’s thick to think that the way to unpick a massed defence is to leave a genuinely smart footballer, Jack Wilshere on the bench.

It’s really dense to imagine that a team that had good results under a liberated captain in Gerrard should revert back to one who barely had the job before he was crocked any road.

And why the hell was there no friendly at the weekend? We can organise an utterly bloody pointless one after the World Cup shambles and in the first week of the new season – but when there’d be good reason to give the players a bit of a run-out – NOWT.

All these things were called stubborn before. Now it’s unintelligent, I tell you.

Meanwhile the press conferences are turning into summat from Allo Allo. Our mother tongue is like the bloody Scarlet Pimpernel for Capello. Surely he should be getting better? And if he’s communicating to his players in this incredibly indecipherable way then really what hope do they have?

It’s not as if these lads don't need a fluent English speaker to say things really slowly in the first place. But clearly Capello doesn’t help himself when his oratory is less Cicero and more Manuel from Fawlty Towers. I mean how long before we have the unedifying sight of Stuart Pearce apologising for his gaffer by saying ‘I’m sorry he’s from San Canzian d'Isonzo?

[By the by, I don’t want to do any more Liverpool stuff. Let’s just hope these new batch of Americans are the tunnel-building life-saving kind and not the ones who barge in and lob grenades around.]

  1. Ha Ha (Nelson Style)

english football is doomed under Capello.

    The man is well thick.

32 teams at the WC and 31 DID NOT play 4-4-2, but o no, he'll stick to it.

Meanwhile, in Germany Spain and even France, they stuck in younger players and lo and behold, they werent made to regret it.

even if they lose an odd game, so what, atleast some one with cajunas made a call

  2. I think Capello has given up. You can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear so why bother. If Kevin Davies is the answer I think the question was lost in translation.

  3. BTW,

I don't care about the Chilean miners anymore. They've gone all commercial and mainstream.

They were cool when they were underground.

  4. What a farce that match was. The moment Kevin Davies appeared was the moment I realised Capello is simply playing out his contract while the golden goose still pays him. Can't see England winning a thing until the whole set up from the FA(rce) down is given root and branch reform. We might be easy by 2024, then again....

  5. Agree with you Spitfire. Just wait for the film. Who will play Yonni "Two Shags" the one with the complicated private life...Robbo are you free?

  6. WHY cant we have a young manager who is willing to build a team with 2014 as a target to do well?

Pick lads who have had a season or half in the premier league and tell the U21 squad to go bugger off in some foreign league for a season each.

That'll open up plenty of competition.

No player over 27 shall even be considered.

    Is it that outlandish?

  7. Come on Robbo! Give Fabio Capello a break! When he was hired England rejoiced like the World Cup has been won but years on the story is different. Fab's proficiency in English is barrier but give the man some credit, he is Italian for crying out loud! Despite being successful in the club game, Fab is just a 'Rookie' in the international scene and England took a gamble that WILL never pay off!
Concerning the captaincy, I see no reason you should be bitter that Rio got his armband back. He is the captain and in his absence Stevie G deputise, so don't robbed Rio of his entitlement.
What is it about SWP that ticks you off? The lad is good enough to play for England hence he makes the team most of the time.
Common on Robbo, your grievances should be laid firmly at the door of the FA for hiring a rookie in the first place. They should have left Steve 'The Wolly with a Brolly' McLaren, given him more time on the job.
As for the contenders for the next manager; assuming he will be English, Harry Redknapp won't be on my list neither will Sam Allardyce...what England needs is a cool-headed man like Roy...yeah Roy Hodgson!

  8. why not hire Klinsmann for the England job?

He was involved in the overhaul of the German football system and didnt do that bad a job in bringing in young players while getting some good out of the seniors.

And he speaks better English than many an Englishman.

    ReplyDelete
  9. is capello thick?

who knows he desnt speak english well enough for anyone here to be able to tell

the real question is : does he give a toss about english football?

Ans : of course he doesnt, he doesnt understand english culture, he doesnt speak the language, he's about to retire, the moneys in the bank, he's italian, why the hell would he?

  15. Absolutely spot on as always Robbo. Why on earth did the BBC let you go?

Gareth Barry is massively over rated, I've been making the point about Hargreaves since before the WC squad was announced. SWP - what's the point. Capello experimented with 4-3-2-1 for about half a game then decided 4-4-2 was better. Manager who is far too stubbon and bad for our national game. Why not have a manager who wants the job, who wants to be leading the country in 2014 and wants to do well in that cup to keep his job? Fabio is short sighted and incapable of adapting.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I seen a comment the other day which kind of sums up your predicament. It read...

"Well now we know that Barry and Johnson are not England class."

I am sorry, but they are.

PS. Robbo apparently it wasn't the American engineers and a load of hard work that saved those Chilean miners. It was all down to God don't you know.

PPS. Meanwhile the Irish Primeidiot has put in a call to the Chilean President to get some advice on getting 4 million people out of a black hole.

  17. Good stuff Robbo, a huge clean-out is called for as suggested by Spit, a veritable de-lousing of the 3 manes. Capello wouldn't know the hair dryer treatment from his curling iron. In fact, when Big Sam takes over KD will be the only surviving hair club for men player from this latest debacle.

  19. Robbo,as much as I love your blogs, this time around I have got to say here we go again.
The English press are the greatest enemy of the English national team,I call them fans with laptops. It is obvious that the English players are NOT as good as the press has made them out to be and quiet frankly Mr Capello can not make the players produce what they do not have.
Capello may be stubborn and bullish but frankly what are the English options Sam Allardyce?...Harry Redknap?...Steve McLaren?
Finally could somone mention the young players England are going to introduce into the team since we are all clamouring for the old guard to be retired as soon as possible!

  20. Seeing as we don't have a decent right back, and 4-4-2 ain't working, here is my new, younger England team, as requested by Mr Richmay1:

    Hart
    Dawson, Jagielka, Cahill
    Lennon, Huddlestone, Wilshire, A Johnson
    Walcott
    Bent, Defoe

Subs: James, Heskey, SWP, Beckham, Scholes, GNev, Bridge

Alternative subs: Foster, Rooney, Hargreaves, A Young, Baines, Carroll, Agbonlahor.

I'm sure you'll all agree - World Cup 2014 is as good as won. They may as well start scratching our name on trophy.

  21. Its only October but the transfer rumours regarding Fabregas are starting to gather pace once more.

Got me thinking, Fabregas left barca for Arsenal at 16 coz they didnt want to give him first team action. After having spent 7 years at Arsenal, a very lean period owing to multiple factors he yearns for a move back to a club winning titles for fun.

If as expected he does leave at end of this season, how ironic will it be that the next 3/4 seasons see a domination of spanish league by a real madrid in ascendancy lead by the spacial one and bankrolled by the state meanwhile Arsenal are on verge of getting debt free in a couple of years?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Oh dear, how to solve English football.

The problem isn't Capello.Look at what he has available to him.Not a lot.So where do we start?

1)Coaching at schools.I'm sure every British poster on here at the age of 8 played on a full size pitch with a full size ball with on overgrown lump hoofing the ball forward. So encourage young school children that the ball is their friend and not a bomb that will explode if they keep possession for longer than 3 seconds.

2)Football clubs. The answer for all our clubs, from Un**ed to Boro is to buy cheap foreign players rather than invest in a decent youth system.I know it doesn't help when Milner costs £24m to Van der Vaart being £8m but the days of developing players has gone.We want quick results, and anyone who doesn't deliver instantly gets media/fans on their backs.

3)Style of English football.Passion, run around a lot shout a lot. That's the way to do it.Erm,no.There's nothing wrong with being direct.Un**ed are at their best when they go forward quickly with 3/4 passes and bang they score.Germany do the same.So why do we want 600 yard glory passes from St Gernard and Beckham? Why do we want "the big lad at the back" to put it into row z?Pass the ball for God's sake.

4)System.Always 4-4-2.As Spits pointed out it is hardly the way forward is it?BHB's great love plays 4-3-3 which turns into 4-5-1 when defending. He's not done too badly by it.10 years ago Fergie decided(quite rightly)that 4-4-2 wouldn't work in Europe. After a couple of misfires he's since reached 2 finals, winning one of them, with teams that even Un**ed fans would agree haven't been as good as previous Fergie sides.(I think that's a back handed compliment)

5)The Premier League.Too many teams play out of fear because of the financial implications of relegation. Now as a Wolves/Stoke/Blackburn fan grinding out results to stay up is an achievement.I can't remember which Stoke manager said "If you want entertainment go to the circus"but the national side might be served better by all teams playing like West Brom and Blackpool with a bit of invention and style.Good luck to them.Because of the financial implications, this goes back to an earlier point, teams bring in cheap foreign players to shore up their side.

    6)Top 5 teams in this country(Chelsea,Un**ed,Arsenal,City,Spurs)

    1 English goalkeeper.(Joe Hart)

    3 English strikers(Rooney,Defoe,Crouch)

Central midfielders, all English players over 30.

    Central defenders,all over 30 bar Dawson/Lescott(I think.And I don't think either of them are far off 30)

Go back 30 years and Paul Cooper(yes,I know it's a little biased)couldn't even get in the England squad.

It'll take 10/15 years to sort out.We will lose to Montenegro/Malta/Scotland occasionally. But would it be worth it?

    I'd like to hope so.

  28. Robbo, exactly the point I had made in last blog. Why did England not play on weekend when other countries played?

    ReplyDelete
  29. I blame the BBC for the decline of the England team. When Robbo was on the BBC and regularly getting the magical TRP England were cruising through the qualifying games for the World Cup and looking good. McNulty then decides to sack Robbo and instantly the performances of the national team drop with poor displays in the friendlies before the world cup and then in South Africa.
So the answer as my dear friend Aleksander would say is "simples". We just need to get Robbo back on the BCC and England will start playing well again.

  30. Another player for Ipswich come from Roy Keane's usual sources

Ipswich are set to take Sunderland utility man Jack Colback, 20, on loan again after a successful spell last season.

I wonder if he is any good

    ReplyDelete
  31. Bayern's injuries already included Arjen Robben, Franck Ribéry, David Alaba, Diego Contento and Bastian Schweinsteiger before this week. Mark van Bommel, Miroslav Klose and Ivica Olic have now returned from playing for their countries with problems likely to keep them out of action for two or three games, perhaps more.

    ___________

    Jacks,

any club would struggle if the likes of the players were out injured, (we, Arsenal fans know it all too well)

    I still chuckle of schadenfreude

more so coz Stuttgart being my second home team have just fired the Spurs legend Christian Gross as manager on account of being hopeless this season.

Second half of last season they only lost one game under his management.

    Summer: sell players (including Khadiera)

This season, 3 points from 7 games.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I don't think McNulty was to blame Colch. It was Lewis Wiltshere.

    Together

Pet Shop Boys' new single, "Together", will be released by Parlophone on November 29th on two CDs and digital download. As well as "Together" the track-listings will include:
    * "Glad all over" - a version of the early 60s hit by The Dave Clark Five which Pet Shop Boys performed in Chris's home town of Blackpool this summer. The song has become a victory anthem for Blackpool FC which rose to the Premier League this year. This new studio version was arranged and produced by Pet Shop Boys and Tim Powell.
    * "I cried for us" - Neil sang this song by the late Kate McGarrigle, mother of Rufus Wainwright, at her memorial concert at the Royal Festival Hall in London in June in an arrangement by Pet Shop Boys. Chris and Neil produced this studio version which was mixed by Pete Gleadall.
    * "Together (extended version)" - remixed by Tim Powell.
Dance remixes of "Together" will also be made available.

Ken Bruce has first play of it next Friday on Radio 2

I reckon Mill Financial will pay the debt which means RBS cannot then force the sale through as they won't be a creditor and H&G will be able to stay in control until a better offer is made more in-keeping with what they see the true value of club

Another gem, Robbo, and I totally agree, Capello hasn't got a clue.

For those who are saying that we should cut him some slack because he can only work with what he's got, don't you think that that's a bit silly when it is him who selects the team?

He's the one that picks the same out of form players and puts them into positions that don't work using tactics that a four year old would believe to be simple.

Surely the buck must stop at him!!

So who to take his place?

I agree with those who say no to 'Arry and Fat Sam, but then you go and promote Woy? He's not doing that gweat at Livewpooh is he?

I totally agree that the next to drink from the poisoned chalice should be English, but how about somebody new, a bit of a radical and someone who knows how to get the best out of limited talent?

    Step up Mr Ian Holloway.

You know he wouldn't shirk away from his responsibilitys and the guy definetly cares, he certainly wears his heart on his sleeve. The only thing that I would worry about him is that he might get a little starstruck, but then again he's a real down to earth guy and I'm pretty sure he wouldn't stand for any shit from the primadonnas.

Clearly the notion of spreading all comedy evenly across the bbc is ludicrous at best and at worst a falsification. This would be unless of course you consider the output of people like Phil McNulty to be comedy - in which case I might agree.

After 9 years you may well feel that the "Robbo" blog has run its course. In which case why not say this? Otherwise you might forgive me for thinking that the only blogs being terminated are those which offer relatively loose moderation policies that allow for free discussion without the constricts of the pc brigade which populate all other blogs. As the public are required to pay a license fee towards the bbc I would appreciate a little more clarity in such matters.

I think England will be the stain on Capellos managerial record. He aint done too bad elsewhere.

I just cant see anyone who could do any better though. I really dont see why 'arry would be any better. I think his teams would go for it but i think we would leak more goals and would lose more games, but we might score more against the smaller teams.

Its time to get the under 15's playing a more fluid type of football and accept that we are going to be shit for 10 years which should take us nicely past the 2018 world cup where we could fuck up on home soil.

  146. and Good Morning to you lot.

    two things.

yes i think Cappello is very thick indeed as well as dense and lacks any kind of courage, I have a suspition the reason why the usual suspects keep getting picked has more to do with Sponsership/Brand and of course Celebrity Material which we here ( not us specificly )have become obseesed with.

    secondly I am not sure if i read this correct or the meaning behind it;

" I mean what’s that about? If I order a pint of ale at the Blue Bell and it’s off, I don’t expect them to tip the damn thing away and pour me another one! Change the flaming barrel. Or give us summat new! "

I cannot of speak for the above mentioned perveyor of ales however as an occasional Guiness Drinker if i found the said ale to be " off " i would be most unpleased, due to two things,1st the cost of the bloody thing itself ad 2ndly its normally dished up, yes thats dished up, by some miserable barman/manager or some bimbo whos only assets worth a mention are here mammorys. So being served such a bad pint would cause me imdiatly to insist on another one! and speaking of barrel changing, should the miserable barman/manager/bimbo fail to pour the 1st few off, then this pint would also be fecking refused.

and no i am not fussy i just like things done properly which is why also I have not a single record/cd/album of the Pet Shop Boys in my rather vast collection of ( cough ) music! nor is there any Rap to be seen or fecking heard.

I have been taking note of your shrewd digs at Arsenal fC in form of selecting our players in your FFL team thereby leading to injury or loss of form for the said individual.

    Payback.

    He'll be a gunner soon.

  152. he' injury prone and ineffectual. is he also skilful, lightweight and a bit flakey?

    C'mon ya Baggies!!!

  181. i do so much dislike this fascinaion or dependence on some guy who came through the " barca acadamy " who gives a fuck what acadamy he came from what matters is cn he play a full term in top flight football? obviously not, in this case ship the guy out along with RVP/Walcoot/bendter etc etc sorry but ive had just about enough of this crap i keep hearing about our team and its future prospects etc blah blah the fact is they are NOT! produceing the goods on the pitch and whos fault is this? perhaps its AW afterall who unlike other managers seems to have a job for life despite the glareing mistakes and errors he has made since having to rebuild a team.

do i shout Wenger out? and Hicks and Gillet in? im undecided.
one things for dam sure I am fed up to back teeth of AW's post match interviews after failing yet again to achieve a result.
